Avalanche Activity

New snow with a critical weak layer on north shaded slopes. Potential for wet avalanches on sunlit slopes.

Above the treeline there is generally a SMALL avalanche danger (1st degree), but in the high Tatras the situation is locally worse on the northern slopes and in the troughs. Due to the recent snowfall and wind, snow slabs and pillows of different thickness and hardness have formed here, lying on a layer of hailstones. Avalanches can be released in such steep locations, especially with a large additional load. On southern, sunlit slopes, smaller spontaneous avalanches may form from wet snow.

Snowpack Structure

The snow cover on the southern slopes is hard - firn in the morning, soft after sunlight. In the northern sectors it is mostly stable, but not worn. Up to 10 cm of new snow has fallen during the last snowfall period, locally even more is found in the gullies. At the highest elevations of the northern orientations there is a layer of hail in the profile. The boundary of the continuous snow cover varies from 1200 to 1500 m above sea level, depending on the orientation. In the Fatras it is already discontinuous on many slopes.

Tendency

with the snowfall coming from Wednesday to Thursday > INCREASING
