Backcountry travelers could trigger soft to dense slabs in wind loaded avalanche terrain at high elevations. At mid elevations isolated pockets of shallow slabs are possible and avalanches are unlikely at the lower elevations.

    Backcountry travelers could trigger slab avalanches in very steep terrain that has been wind loaded over the last week. These slabs could have depths to eighteen inches. Increasing temperatures and direct sunlight will increase the sensitivity of these slabs today before the next round of precipitation begins. Yesterday a skier was able to avoid being caught when he triggered a slab with a one foot crown on a southeast aspect at 9500 feet in Jensen Canyon.

Avalanche Discussion

Periodic snow showers that could be mixed with rain at low elevations are expected on Saturday as the low pressure trough pushes moisture through the area. Temperatures are to be similar with lows in the teens and highs in the upper twenties at the high elevations. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be Moderate in the western region of Wyoming. Above 8500 feet, pockets of soft to dense wind slabs with depths to eighteen inches could be triggered in very steep terrain. In the Togwotee Pass area additional hazard exists with a slight chance for large triggers to initiate large hard slab avalanches deep in the snowpack.
