Avalanche Activity

TO for 01.01. Moderately bonded windslab instabilities on South through West to North aspects above 650m. Avalanche Hazard Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: Snow distribution will continue to build unstable windslab onto South through West to North aspects. There will be some improved stability on higher North-East to East aspects as the wind redistributes the snow. Areas most effected by windslab instabilities will be wind sheltered coire rims, ridge crests and gullies above 650 metres. Cornices will continue to develop. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: There will be fresh to strong East winds overnight, decreasing in strength becoming light East-North-East. It will be dry for much of the period, then light snow showers later. The freezing level will remain at around 100 metres at first then gradually rise to hover around 400 meters. Observed Weather Influences: It has been a dry day after heavy overnight snowfall. Winds were fresh South-Westerly turning North by midday. The freezing level was around 100 metres. ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack has firmed up in the cooler conditions. An icy breakable crust remains on the exposed older snow pack. The new snow has redistributed in the strong winds with extensive areas of moderately bonded windslab instabilities developing on South through North to North-East aspects with some cross loading evident. Areas most effected are coire rims, wind sheltered ridge crests and gullies above 600 metres. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
