In sintesi

The avalanche danger will increase quickly as winter makes a comeback over the holiday weekend.  Larger and more consequential avalanches are possible on wind-loaded slopes at upper elevations.  On steep open slopes below treeline,  don't let a small avalanche rake you through recently exposed rocks, stumps or other travel hazards.

    Strong to extreme west winds may build fresh wind slabs further downslope than usual, cross load gullies and other features, and drift snow on open slopes below treeline.  Sunday should be a stormy day above treeline with poor visibility and it won't be an easy day to finesse terrain choices.  You can stick to wind-scoured ridgelines and lower angled slopes not connected to steeper terrain.  If you see shooting cracks in the freshly drifted snow,  assume you can trigger a slab avalanche on nearby slopes.   

    Look for red flags like cracking in wind drifted snow.

  • Storm Slabs

    Moderate to heavy snowfall will increase the likelihood of natural and human triggered storm slabs in sheltered terrain Sunday.  You can use quick hand tests or small test slopes to gauge the reactiveness of the new snow.  Storm slabs may break on inter-storm layers or where bonded poorly to the old snow surface.  You're more likely to trigger a storm slab on convex rollovers and on very steep unsupported slopes.

    This snow will go a long way to refresh the riding and traveling conditions but it won't bury rocks, tree stumps, and all the other ground hazards that have become exposed over the last month.  A small avalanche can ruin your day in the wrong piece of terrain.

We are exiting an extended period of relatively low avalanche danger with no layers of concerns below the new/old snow interface.  Enjoy the improving conditions this week while traveling safely.  And please, let us know what you see!
