In sintesi

Weak snow persists in the snowpack. Riders and skiers have the potential to trigger slab avalanches at the mid and upper elevations. Avoid very steep terrain, especially near cliff or rocky areas. Avalanches are unlikely today at the low elevations except for in isolated areas.

    An extended dry period in December formed a layer of weak snow that can be found on all aspects above 7500 feet.  The chance continues for recreationalists to trigger hard slab avalanches with depths of 2 to 4 feet involving this buried layer. Although the likelihood of triggering a slide has decreased,  very steep terrain remains suspect and careful snowpack evaluation is recommended.

Avalanche Discussion

The uncommonly warm period has ended. The chance of triggering a slide involving the widespread weak snow buried in early January has decreased significantly as the slabs have hardened and strengthened. The chance of wet slabs that have been occcuring on that same weak layer the last several days will be virtually non-existent by Saturday.  This temporary decrease in the danger ratings will not last. The weak layer is still well preserved in the snowpack and will become more active again if the snowpack is rapidly and significantly loaded. In addition to the persistent slab problem, expected snowfall and wind will form sensitive surface slabs as well by Saturday morning.  Snow surfaces that are about to be buried include slick crusts, hard snow and in some sheltered areas faceted surface snow with areas of surface hoar.
