Today, you can trigger a large avalanche at middle and upper elevations, as evidenced by Thursday's remote-triggered slide and numerous collapses. The hazard is greatest on open, shaded slopes near ridgelines that lack a supportable crust a few inches below the surface. Low-angle shaded terrain offers soft turns and safer riding conditions.

    A nasty layer of buried surface hoar on a crust is responsible for six human-triggered avalanches in recent weeks, most recently a remotely triggered slide near Tunnel Ridge. Add the widespread collapsing reported over the last two days across the forecast area, and the picture is clear. This layer is widespread, extending to ridgeline, and you should assume it exists — and can produce an avalanche — on any steep, open slope lacking a stout, supportable crust beneath the recent snow.

    We don’t need more evidence to shape our travel plans. You are likely to trigger an avalanche if you poke this bear — the question is how big it will be.

    In many places, the slab remains thin and soft, and most avalanches have been relatively small. But not all. The 1,000-foot-wide slide on Snowshed last week shows this setup can still produce a large, dangerous avalanche (see video).  Near the ridge, even subtle wind stiffening may be enough to support wider propagation.

    Recent faceting and new surface hoar will make these slab changes difficult to detect, as differences in stiffness may be below what you can feel with your feet or machine. Give steep, shaded slopes near ridgelines a wide margin, and stay alert in connected lower-angle terrain where a slide from above could reach you.

    Riders remotely triggered this slab avalanche while on a nearby ridge. This failed on a buried layer of surface hoar 40cm below the surface. Today, remotely triggering an avalanche is likely to occur on steep slopes where the surface hoar layer is preserved and not capped by a supportable crust. This slide occurred on a NE slope at 6800'.

Avalanche Discussion

You may notice a disconnect between the Moderate danger rating and the fact that triggering a slide is likely. The moderate rating is due to expected avalanche size. With that in mind, traveling on a slope likely to avalanche just because you expect the slide to be small is a game of roulette I don’t recommend. If you test this snowpack, make sure consequences are minimal, expose only one person at a time, and keep a close eye on your partners.

Current Conditions

A few inches of snow, coupled with increased traffic, and the snowpack is speaking once again. On Friday, a group of travelers made the conscious decision to avoid steep open slopes near ridgeline. Their decision was a good one, as confirmed by the hard slab avalanche they remotely triggered from low-angle terrain above. Meanwhile, Mark and I repeatedly collapsed the snowpack at Patrol Ridge, and a professional near Stryker Peak reported additional collapses and an ECTP1 on the buried surface hoar. These add to Thursday’s widespread whumpfing.

I have nothing positive to report about this weak layer, only a healthy fear. It was buried over two weeks ago and has shown little sign of strengthening. So far, the only saving grace has been a generally thin, soft slab and limited traffic — both of which are about to change. We also have the extra wrinkle of a new crop of surface hoar hanging out all over the advisory area; if that gets capped and preserved, it certainly won’t help the situation.  

I expect this problem to get worse before it gets better, possibly as soon as Saturday.
