Yesterday, another round of significant avalanche activity occurred in the Central Tetons. The April snowfall has undergone two substantial melt-freeze cycles, and skies were clear enough overnight for snow surfaces to freeze. With above freezing air temperatures, it won’t take much sunshine to produce unstable avalanche conditions. Wet slabs could be one to three feet deep and may be significantly deeper above 10,500 feet in the Central Tetons. These wet slides could travel long distances into low elevation terrain and may gouge down to the ground in areas where the snowpack is isothermal.
