In sintesi

A thin and generally stable snowpack can be found at most locations across the Kootenai. The most concerning weakness in the snowpack can be found in spotty locations on north aspects above tree line.

    Weak and sugary snow developing on the December 7th rain crust can be found at elevations above 7,000' on northerly aspects. This weak layer is found in sporadic locations in higher terrain and will likely be difficult to trigger due to the rain crust near the snowpack surface. Steep and planar (smooth and open) slopes at upper elevations of the East Cabinets are where you may find and trigger this layer. If you are venturing into the high country to ride big and committing terrain, you will want to take the time to assess the presence of this layer before committing.

Avalanche Discussion

There isn't a whole lot to talk about in our snowpack at the moment so I will keep it simple. Thin coverage and the risk of hitting buried obstacles remains the primary safety concern out there in the backcountry. Avalanche risk is minimal due to the thin snowpack that is well anchored by vegetation in most areas. The weak layer mentioned in the problems section is low in likelihood due to its highly variable distribution and reactivity. It is also bridged by our most recent rain crust. For the real adventurous types that are going into the bigger terrain of the East Cabinets I would keep this on the radar before jumping onto big alpine terrain.

Looking forward into early next week it appears there will be some pulses of moisture bringing light snow to the mountains. As of yet, none of these are predicted to bring a level of snowfall and wind that will impact the stability of the snowpack, or the coverage needed to improve the riding conditions out there.
