In sintesi

This week, persistent layers of crusts and facets buried one to four feet deep have resulted in large avalanches in the Tetons. Today, it will be possible for the weight of a person to trigger a large slide. These slides could be encountered above 8,000 feet on East, North, and West facing aspects and seem to favor slopes that had a shallow snowpack prior to the March 5 snowfall. Above freezing temperatures along with strong solar radiation will increase the likelihood of triggering a slab avalanche and result in wet loose slides during the warmest portions of the day. At the lower elevations, the hazard will remain Low and avalanche activity is expected to be small wet loose slides isolated to steep terrain. Heightened avalanche conditions exist in the mountains, and backcountry travelers should evaluate the snowpack and identify areas of concern.

    Persistent weak layers can be tricky to predict and may not show any warning signs until it is too late. Since March 5, there has been 35 to 40 inches of snow with close to 3 inches of water that has formed into variable slabs throughout the mountains. These slabs range from soft to hard with the denser slabs at the upper elevations on wind-loaded slopes. Persistent avalanches can also be triggered from below a slope, so it is advised to stay out from under avalanche terrain today.

    Warming temperatures and strong solar radiation will destabilize snow surfaces and cause wet loose avalanches on solar aspects. At the lower elevations and in areas with a shallow snowpack, these slides could gouge down to the ground and entrain wet snow that lacks cohesion. The warming temperatures will also increase the chances of triggering a slab avalanche. Backcountry travelers should avoid slopes as they become wet.

Avalanche Discussion

A winter storm will begin to impact the area tonight and last through tomorrow. Southerly to southwesterly winds will increase into the twenties and thirties with gusts into the forties. Light snow overnight will become widespread by early Sunday with the heaviest snowfall forecasted from 4 am through 2 pm. Accumulation is forecasted to be three to eight inches in the mountains with one to three inches in the valleys. Mountain temperatures will start in the low twenties and warm into the mid to upper twenties.While the avalanche hazard is expected to be Moderate in all three forecast areas tomorrow, the size and distribution of these slides vary in each zone. In the Grey’s River area, these slides have been reported daily and on steep avalanche terrain, large avalanches could be possible. In the Tetons, the distribution of large avalanches seems to be isolated to slopes that had a thin snowpack prior to the March snowfall. On Togwotee Pass, the poor structure is widespread but there are limited areas where a slab exists to complete the recipe for an avalanche. New wind and snow will increase the potential to trigger a persistent slab avalanche and form shallow wind slabs at the upper elevations. Backcountry travelers should monitor the development of the storm and be aware of areas with a heightened hazard.
