In sintesi

Avalanche conditions are dangerous. Human-triggered avalanches are likely and naturally-occuring avalanches are possible on north, east, and south-facing slopes above 3000 feet in elevation. Conservative decision making is critical for safe travel in the mountains today. Deep drifts of new snow, cracking underneath your feet, and blowing snow from the wind are all signs that conditions are dangerous in steep terrain.

    Expect to find new wind slabs that are increasing in size and sensitivity throughout the day. You could find and trigger a new wind slab on steep slopes above 3000 feet in elevation that face north, east, or south. Consistent wind loading will continue to add volume and stress to new wind slabs which could allow for naturally-occurring, spontaneous avalanches today. These avalanches could be large enough to bury one or more people. 

    Conservative decision making around avalanche terrain will be essential today as new wind slabs build and change. The most obvious signs of dangerous wind slabs will include deep wind drifts forming in wind-protected areas, long & shooting cracks underneath your feet, and snow being transported at the ridgelines (which may also cause poor visibility).

Avalanche Discussion

Though the calendar and conditions in the valley might be saying spring, expect wintertime conditions in the Presidential Range with avalanche hazard as a very significant and dangerous hazard today. 

Over the last 48 hours, the Mount Washington area has received over 5 inches of new snow with limited wind effect in many areas. Today, with increasing winds and an additional 3 - 6 inches of snow accumulation, a significant amount of snow is available for transport onto wind-protected slopes. These increasing and shifting winds will allow for slabs to build with a poor strong-over-weak structure that could be very sensitive to triggering, especially because it is resting on a slick melt-freeze crust in many locations. 

It’s important to remember that conditions low down in avalanche terrain can give a false sense of stability when compared to conditions at higher elevations and closer to the ridgelines, where snow transport and wind slab development can be much more pronounced. Consider what kind of terrain is above you today, how slab formation might be different from your immediate location, and what the consequence would be in the case of a large avalanche.
