In sintesi

It will be possible to trigger avalanches in steep terrain in the upper elevations today. New snow and moderate wind will create slabs up to a foot deep. Watch for signs of unstable snow in the form of avalanches, shooting cracks and whoompfing. When these signs are present, move to lower angled terrain.

    New snow and moderate westerly winds will create fresh wind slabs up to a foot in depth in steep upper elevation starting zones. These slabs will be most sensitive as they are actively forming. Over the last 3 days up to 20 inches of new snow and wind has created wind slabs up to 2 feet thick. These older wind slabs have been reactive but are likely gaining strength. The slabs forming today will be stacked on top of these older slabs. Terrain over 35 degrees will be required to get slabs moving today. Be on the lookout for and avoid areas with signs of active wind loading such as stiff, rounded, or hollow sounding snow. Shooting cracks and collapses are indicators of instability that warrant more conservative terrain choices.

    Weak snow that formed in early December is now buried 2-4 feet deep. The likelihood of triggering avalanches at these deeper layers is following a downward trend. It has been 5 days since the last known avalanches occurred at this interface. Large triggers such as snowmobiles, groups, cornices or avalanches within the new snow will be required to initiate avalanches on these layers. With new snow accumulating and adding additional stress today, it will remain important to keep these deeper weak layers on the radar. Minimize exposure by travelling one at a time on steep terrain, utilizing islands of safety and communicating plans within your group.

Avalanche Discussion

Since Christmas, the Tetons have picked up 40” of new snow containing 4” of snow water equivalent. This has formed slabs averaging in the 2-4 foot range across the forecast zone. These slabs are sitting on weaker snow near the base of the snowpack. The mid December facet layer has been put to the test throughout this period, with a handful of observed avalanches up to D2.5 in size. While the likelihood of triggering deeper weak layers is on the decline, we are not out of the woods yet. New snow and wind will add some additional weight and stress to these underlying layers. This is keeping the deeper instability on the problem list for the time being. With snowfall tapering off and high pressure building next week, expect the deeper instability to move into a dormant phase.
