Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs and wet snow represent the main danger.

The clearly visible wind slabs of the weekend can be released by a single winter sport participant in some cases in particular on very steep shady slopes above approximately 2300 m. Caution is to be exercised in particular at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack, when entering gullies and bowls for example. Avalanches can also penetrate deep layers and reach large size. Maintaining distances between individuals and one-at-a-time descents are recommended. In starting zones where no previous releases have taken place and on very steep sunny slopes small and medium-sized natural avalanches are possible as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation, in particular in steep rocky terrain.

Snowpack Structure

In the last few days clearly visible wind slabs formed above the tree line. Faceted weak layers exist deeper in the old snowpack in particular on shady slopes. Outgoing longwave radiation during the night will be good. As a consequence of highly fluctuating temperatures and solar radiation a crust formed on the surface during the last few days, in particular below approximately 2400 m on steep sunny slopes. Sunshine and high temperatures will give rise from early morning to increasing moistening of the snowpack in particular at low and intermediate altitudes.
