Snowpack
Snowdrift accumulations, some of which are still prone to triggering formed in Wednesday’s southerly winds. In the north, the underlying structure of the old snowpack is pretty favourable. In southern Valais, Ticino and Grisons, the old snowpack still contains faceted layers, which are still prone to triggering, especially from the Davos region via Lower Engadine to Val Müstair, where a few avalanches have been triggered in the old snowpack in recent days. In Ticino, the weak layers in the old snowpack are now so heavily covered that only isolated avalanches can be triggered in the old snowpack.
The snowpack is water-saturated below approximately 3000 m on south-facing slopes, below approximately 2200 to 2400 m on west and east-facing slopes, and below approximately 1700 m on north-facing slopes. The mild temperatures mean that moisture penetration is continuing to progress.
During the clear night to Friday, a sometimes strong melt-freeze crust will form on sunny slopes. As daytime temperatures rise in the sunshine, this will soften as the day progresses and the risk of wet and gliding avalanches will increase.
OutlookSaturday
After a clear night, conditions will be sunny, with light winds and very mild temperatures during the day. The zero-degree level will be around 3000 m.
The risk of dry avalanches will continue to decrease, while the risk of wet avalanches will increase during the day. Touring and off-piste skiing and ascents to mountain huts should be completed in good time.
Sunday
The night to Sunday will be partly clear in the east and south and elsewhere mostly clear. It will be pretty sunny in the mountains during the day. There will be moderate to strong northeasterly winds at high altitudes and a moderate Bise wind in the western Prealps. Temperatures will remain mild in the west and south, while the zero-degree level will drop towards 2000 m in the east.
The risk of dry avalanches will continue to decrease, while the risk of wet avalanches will increase a little during the day.
