In sintesi

We continue to observe weak persistent grain types in our snowpack. At this time the likelyhood of triggering an avalanche on these weak layers is low but the consequences of such an avalanche could be high. Therefore, the best strategy for staying safe while recreating on the slopes will be to make conservative decisions about the terrain you choose to recreate on and around.

    We are still seeing the Solstice Rain Crust and associated facets in our snow pits and this layer still lingers close enough to the surface to be affected by the weight of a recreationalist resulting in a potentially dangerous avalanche.Facets reside below the SRC all the way to the ground. These basal facets are rounding and this layer is gaining strength but know that it is present and potentially problematic.Maintain conservative terrain choices even when instability appears unreactive.     A group of skiers that were ski touring in the Southern Wallowas during Tuesday's snow event observed small avalanches and shooting cracks above Cornacopia Lodge between 5800' and 6800' . The storm snow they were traveling in was a foot deep and failing on buried surface hoar.On the same day a skier was skiing on Angell Peak in the Elkhorns and triggered an avalanche in the new snow.Once again,the weak layer was surface hoar that had formed on the surface of the old snow and was buried by the new storm snow.The surface hoar makes it difficult for the new snow to bond to the old snow and  persists for days or even weeks,  compromising the bond at the new snow/old snow interface. Surface hoar likes areas that are shaded from the sun and sheltered from the wind. Take the time to evaluate any steep slope you intend travel on where you suspect the existence of surface hoar.See the details about the Angell Peak avalanches in the "observations " section of this website.

Avalanche Discussion

In my travels in the Northern Elkhorns today and Wednesday I have been seeing semi supportable rain crust at all aspects and elevations. The thickness of the crusts vary from location to location. Snow depth varies from place to place. In some areas the snow is over 6' deep. Other areas are holding 4' of snow. Structurally I am seeing the Solstice Rain Crust down about mid pack.The SRC is a multi layer crust/facet sandwich. It rests upon facets that are consolidating and therefore gaining strength. Above the SRC the snowpack seems right side up. In my test pit today l did an extended column test and a compression test. The ECT test failed to produce a fracture or propagation (ECTX). The compression test failed using a hard amount of force.The failure occurred 90 cm down just below the SRC. The shear was uneven and resistant (CT 21 Q3 90cm down).
