Avalanche Activity

Very cloudy or overcast with extensive precipitation. Snowfall level rising from 1200-1400 m on all sectors up to 1600-2000 m, with the highest levels in the east. New accumulations expected between 20 and 40 cm on the Prealps and Orobie. Avalanche danger 4 strong above the treeline.

The new heavy rainfall will increase and overload the significant layer of recent snow that has not yet consolidated; the threat rating will remain 4 Strong. The detachment will be possible with a low overload, especially on many steep slopes and in particular where old mantle is present (northern exposures). To the south, the entire recent snow cover rests, almost entirely, on unfrozen uncovered ground, a condition that will favor accentuated snow flow phenomena. Numerous natural avalanches, both ground and surface, of large and very large dimensions will be possible.

Snowpack Structure

The new heavy quantities of snow expected will lead to a significant overload of the snowpack which presents very weak consolidation in the recently formed surface layers.
