Avalanche Activity

Fresh snow/snowdrifts increasingly trigger-prone at high altitude

Avalanche danger is moderate. Fresh drifts can trigger a medium slab by 1 person. On the one hand, fresh ridgeline (and distant from ridges) snowdrifts can be triggered as a slab avalanche by 1 person - frequency and size of danger zones increase with ascending altitude and during the course of the day - and on the other, in case of extended bright intervals small loose-snow avalanches can trigger naturally, or by a person, and grow to medium size. Backcountry tours demand careful planning. Glide-snow avalanches are still possible.

Snowpack Structure

An additional 10-20 cm of frsh snow plus intermittently strong winds will generate fresh snowdrift accumulations. With ascending altitude, the fresh snow and drifts lie deposited atop soft layers and are prone to triggering; also the drifts and uppermost layers of the snowpack lie atop weak layers (wind and graupel). The snowpack is moist-to-wet down to the ground up to high altitudes. Gliding snow activity has receded due to lower temperatures, but small glide-snow avalanches are still being observed on ground which was bare of snow prior to this bout of precipitation.

Weather Forecast

Nocturnal hours: Gray skies, intermittent snowfall, even down to low lying areas. Sunday daytime: Late winter scenario: snowfall and graupel showers, fog and snowfall reduce the visibility, only brief intervals of sunshine. At 2000 m: -6 degrees. Light to moderate northerly winds.

Tendency

In the southern regions, light snowfall on Monday. Further north, mostly dry. It will remain cold in the mountains. Avalanche danger levels are not expected to change significantly.
