Avalanche Activity

Fresh wind slabs require caution. There is a danger of falling on the hard crust.

At high altitudes and in high Alpine regions the wind slabs have increased in size on Tuesday. The fresh wind slabs can in some cases be released, even by a single winter sport participant, especially adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas, in particular on very steep slopes. Individual natural dry avalanches are possible, but they can reach medium size in some cases, especially on extremely steep slopes, and at the base of rock walls in high Alpine regions.

Snowpack Structure

Monday: The weather was cold. In some localities 0 to 5 cm of snow has fallen, in particular along the border with France and along the border with Switzerland. The moderate wind has transported the new snow. The old snowpack is well consolidated and its surface consists of loosely bonded snow lying on a strong melt-freeze crust. In particular at intermediate and high altitudes there is still a very large amount of snow above approximately 2200 m.

Tendency

The backcountry touring conditions are quite favourable.
