Avalanche Activity

Wet and gliding snow represent the main danger.

From the late morning as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation there will be a gradual increase in the danger of wet avalanches. Avalanches can in some places be released, even by a single winter sport participant. The avalanche prone locations are to be found on very steep shady slopes below approximately 2600 m and on very steep sunny slopes in all altitude zones. Especially in starting zones where no previous releases have taken place individual small and medium-sized natural avalanches are possible. Gliding avalanches can also occur at any time. Such avalanche prone locations for gliding avalanches are to be found in particular on very steep grassy slopes. Areas with glide cracks are to be avoided as far as possible. Wherever the outgoing longwave radiation during the night is reduced the danger will increase more quickly. Backcountry tours should be started very early and concluded timely.

Snowpack Structure

Outgoing longwave radiation during the night will be quite good. The weather will be very mild. The surface of the snowpack will freeze to form a strong crust only at high altitudes and will already soften in the late morning. The spring-like weather conditions as the day progresses will give rise to increasing and thorough wetting of the snowpack.

Tendency

Wet snow represents the main danger.
