Avalanche Activity

The new snow and wind slabs represent the main danger.

Above approximately 1600 m snow has fallen since yesterday in some localities. 10 to 15 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen above approximately 1700 m. The wind was light over a wide area. In particular on steep slopes small natural avalanches are possible. The somewhat older wind slabs are barely possible to recognise and in some cases prone to triggering. On Thursday the wind will be moderate to strong over a wide area. In particular adjacent to ridgelines the wind slabs will increase in size appreciably as the day progresses. Wind slabs can be released by small loads. Small and, in isolated cases, medium-sized avalanches are possible in particular in shady places that are protected from the wind.

Snowpack Structure

In some regions only a little snow is lying. The snowpack will be subject to considerable local variations. The new snow is lying on top of a weakly bonded old snowpack on shady slopes above approximately 1800 m. Weak layers exist in the snowpack on steep shady slopes.
