Avalanche Activity

In some regions up to 5 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall above approximately 2700 m.

The avalanche prone locations for moist avalanches are to be found in particular on cut slopes below approximately 2300 m. Bases of rock walls are especially unfavourable. From starting zones that have retained some snow on very steep shady slopes moist avalanches can in very isolated cases reach large size. The more recent wind slabs are to be found especially in the vicinity of peaks. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls in northwest to north to northeast facing aspects above approximately 2500 m. Transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack where weaknesses exist in the old snowpack are especially dangerous. Hardly any increase in danger of moist and wet avalanches as a consequence of the precipitation.

Snowpack Structure

Precarious weak layers exist in the snowpack on northwest, north and northeast facing slopes. The weather conditions as the day progresses will give rise to increasing moistening of the snowpack in some places in particular on steep slopes below approximately 2700 m. The new snow will be deposited on a weakly bonded old snowpack below approximately 2700 m.
