Consider the consequences of a small loose avalanche on very steep slopes or extreme terrain features.   The new snow should improve travel conditions but may mask recently exposed rocks, icy slopes or other travel hazards.

    With a few inches of cold dry snow likely Sunday, you can trigger small loose snow avalanches on very steep or extreme terrain features.   With a variety of weak snow surfaces found over a  firm crust,  loose dry avalanches or "sluffs" may run faster and further than you expect given the amount of new snow.  Don't let these predictable avalanches catch you off guard and knock you off your feet above cliff bands,  tree bands, or other terrain traps. 

    If Hurricane Ridge receives just a bit more wind and snow than forecast by the end of Sunday,  you may find fresh and shallow wind slabs on lee slopes and below ridgelines.  Observe if active wind loading is occurring near and above treeline.   Feel if the new snow is firmer than expected.  If this is the case, use caution on open slopes steeper than 35 degrees with freshly drifted snow.

Avalanche Discussion

We'll finally receive some fresh snow on Sunday with 2-4" of lower density snow likely by Sunday afternoon.  If you're traveling to the other parts of the Olympics, such as the southern and western parts of the range, expect higher snowfall totals. Winds will increase on Sunday but it is unclear whether winds will stay elevated throughout the day.  New snow will fall on a variety of surfaces; weak dry snow,  thin breakable surface crusts,  firm icy slopes, and older frozen avalanche debris. Below the surface snow, you will find a generally strong snowpack that lacks any concerning weak layers. 

Use caution if you encounter non-avalanche travel hazards like open creeks,  variable snow surfaces, exposed rocks, and firm and icy slopes.  

2020-21 Forecast Schedule: Avalanche danger ratings will be issued for the Olympics every Friday through Sunday and during mid-week holidays. During the week when the Hurricane Ridge road is closed, forecast information will be updated daily to include expected conditions and relevant travel advice under the No Rating label.

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
