In sintesi

Another warm and sunny day will mean that small Loose-Wet sloughs that could enlarge and entrain enough snow to become problematic will again become possible today on steep slopes as they warm and become wet. Avalanche danger will rise to MODERATE on E to S to W aspects at mid and lower elevations, and even northerly aspects at lower elevations.

Small natural and human triggered loose-wet slides occurred yesterday, at least one of which entrained enough snow and funneled through a chute that could have been consequential had a person been involved.  The overnight snow re-freeze, daytime temperatures, breezy SW winds at upper elevations and clear skies expected today are all very similar to yesterday’s conditions. Pay attention to how surface snow is warming and recognize the potential consequences of loose-wet slides particularly on long steep slopes and slopes that funnel through a gully or end in a depression. Timing is everything and is very dependent on aspect and elevation. Plan to travel up when slopes are firm and down when they soften just right, but not too much. Today’s SW winds will likely keep exposed upper-elevation slopes from softening too much, but keep an eye out near rock bands where things could heat up more.
