A strong and sometimes icy surface crust should help create generally safe avalanche conditions Sunday. If you choose to travel into very steep and rocky terrain, look for isolated and shallow pockets of wind drifted snow. Be leery of slightly deeper deposits and slopes below cornices.

    We expect a few inches of new snow at mid and upper elevations around Snoqualmie Pass by mid-morning. This should not increase the avalanche danger. However, in very steep and rocky terrain you may find this couple of inches of snow drifted into shallow and isolated wind slabs. If you plan to travel onto cliffy faces or into rock-walled chutes, take time to make visual observations of the snow surface prior to committing to the slope. Be suspicious if you see subtle texturing on the surface or notice small drifts behind rocks. Even small avalanches can harm you in more extreme terrain.

    (12/16/2020) Example: This wind slab avalanche was triggered by a party at the upper reaches of the Slot Coulior on Mt Snoqualmie. Rocky and confined terrain can form shallow wind slabs that could knock you off your feet.

Avalanche Discussion

A strong upper snowpack comprised of numerous crust,  layers of moist rounded grains, and refreezing melt-forms exists around the Snoqualmie Pass zone. This will limit the avalanche danger and any hazard should be confined to the dusting of new snow. You may find a surface curst all the way to rideline on most peaks. The crust should change with elevation becoming more supportable as you ascend. Anticipate icy conditions covered by a few inches of snow at mid and upper elevations. 

Challenging travel conditions could pose the greatest risk to you Sunday. Breakable crusts, piles of avalanche debris, frozen tree bombs, and open creeks all await you. Give yourself plenty of extra time to navigate these tricky conditions. 

For the past several days our forecast included Glide avalanches for the Snoqualmie area. New glide cracks formed as recently as Friday. Given the time since last week's rain event,  recent relatively cooler temperatures, and minimal forecasted precipitation, we removed them from the problem list. However, predicting glide avalanches is incredibly difficult. If you see crevasse-like glide cracks, consider traveling around instead of under these slopes. While an avalanche seems very unlikely at this point, if it did release, it would cause a very large and deadly slide.
