In sintesi

Dangerous avalanche conditions continue. On a variety of aspects and elevations, backcountry skiers and riders still have the potential of triggering large to very large persistent slab avalanches in steep terrain. Although these slabs have become less sensitive to triggering, the danger rating remains elevated due to the widespread distribution of the weak layer problem and the difficulty in determining which slopes remain prone to failure. Also, if triggered, these avalanches could be large to very large in size and carry dire consequences to anyone involved. At lower elevations, the snowpack is weak and smaller human triggered avalanches remain a possibility in steep terrain.

    Faceted weak layers are prevalent throughout the region however the amount of that weakness and the amount of cohesive snow over it varies greatly. This variability requires an extra margin of safety; now is not the time to let your guard down and become complacent. Above 7500 feet, slab depths could reach four feet while below that elevation, slabs are more likely to have depths of one foot. Although the first person on a slope could still cause failure, it is more likely to occur when a particularly thin and weak spot on a slope is impacted or by larger triggers such as snowmobiles or groups of people. Under these conditions, do not trust tracks as an indication of stability.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Inversion conditions are to continue tomorrow. Cloud cover will vary between partly and mostly sunny. Highs in the twenties are expected at all elevations. West winds are to have 10 to 15 mph averages. The general avalanche hazard will remain Considerable above 7500 feet in the Teton and Southwest Trails areas and Moderate below that elevation. The rating in the Togwotee area will be Moderate above 8000 feet and Low at lower elevations. Avalanches involving persistent weak layers could still be triggered throughout western Wyoming. They could be largest in the higher elevations of the Teton and Southwest forecast areas where they could have depths to four feet. Continue a cautious approach to terrain selection as determining which slopes will fail is difficult and even a few tracks on a slope are insignificant as slabs may release only when a thin trigger point on a slope is hit.
