You could trigger a large avalanche in drifted snow on steep terrain protected from the wind. The most likely place to find the avalanche problem is in steep, east-facing ravines below 5000 feet. Blowing snow will limit your ability to make visual observations, so watch out for softer areas of drifted snow where your boots or skis can penetrate into the snowpack and carefully evaluate the snow stability.

    What and where is it:About 25 hours of sustained westerly winds over 100 mph have redistributed Sunday’s 12 inches of snow onto easterly aspects. You could trigger a large, hard slab avalanche in the most wind-protected areas below ridgelines, underneath cliffs, and in narrow gullies. In many areas, you will likely find a stable, hardened, or wind-scoured snow surface.How can you recognize it: Watch for areas of softer wind-drifted snow, where your boots or skis are punching through the snow surface. If you see shooting cracks under your feet, you have found a reactive wind slab. Use your ski pole, or a shovel to get more information about snowpack structure and stability. Look for hard strong snow on top of soft, weaker snow below. How can you manage it:Blowing snow and intense winds will make visual observations challenging or impossible. If you brave the wind and cold today, carefully choose routes to minimize your exposure to steep slopes above you and carefully evaluate the snowpack where you are choosing to travel.

Avalanche Discussion

Without good visual observations yesterday, there is some amount of uncertainty regarding the presence and reactivity of wind slabs from over 25 hours of sustained 100 mph winds (13 of those hours had sustained winds over 120 mph). While it is possible for you to find very protected areas that are harboring a softer, more reactive wind slab, significant portions of avalanche terrain are likely to be scoured, wind-hardened, and stable. It is critical to make your own observations to drive decision-making.

While avalanche danger has dropped significantly since yesterday, do not discount the consequence of triggering a large, very hard wind slab. Careful evaluation of snowpack structure and stability, good route finding, and effective terrain management can help you mitigate the risk of triggering or being caught in a large wind slab today. 

At low elevations below 3000 feet, watch out for sensitive pockets of wind-drifted snow.
