In sintesi

Slopes where you could trigger weak snow near the base of the snowpack are becoming fewer and farther between. It remains possible to trigger a destructive avalanche, particularly on shaded slopes at upper elevations.  Additional recent snowfall may mask low snow-coverage hazards and, though not very deep, may pose a threat in exposed, consequential terrain.

    Triggering a persistent slab avalanche is trending more unlikely, but that is not the same as impossible. Snowpit observations from across the zone still show propagation with medium to high strength (meaning difficult to trigger but still triggerable). Though weak layers gain strength slowly, especially if given time without a significant load of snow, dry weather tends to work simultaneously with this process by weakening the slab of snow sitting atop these layers. This means that this dragon will awaken again the next time a significant amount of snow is delivered.

    It remains possible to trigger a persistent slab avalanche on steep, unsupported, and shady slopes (see example photo). Terrain like this is most common at upper elevations. Still, I would carefully assess any shady slope on the north half of the compass and picture the consequences of an avalanche in that terrain. Remember that a slope can have scores of tracks before a weak spot is impacted. Here are some tips for managing the lingering avalanche hazard:

    Digging a quick snow pit can help verify the existence and severity of weak snow in the terrain of your choice. 

    Use safe travel practices and expose one person at a time to avalanche terrain. Decreasing danger can result in folks entering avalanche terrain MORE often but using safe travel practices LESS often.

    Recent snowfall may mask rocks, trees, and other low-coverage hazards. The alpine of the Tetons has significantly lower coverage than previous seasons, so adjust your terrain utilization plans accordingly.  Recent snowfall may pose a threat if riders encounter small drifts at the highest elevations in consequential terrain where they could get knocked off their feet.

    This is a great example of "steep, unsupported terrain".

The full story of our weak snowpack structure has yet to play out. Plan your terrain choices for low-coverage hazards and regard the snowpack with continued skepticism. For now, we are experiencing the shorter version of a complete story, like below:

‘Twas the day of Christmas, and across the mountain turf

Not a creature was stirring, certainly not to pow surf

The stockings were hung by the boot drier with care, in hopes that Ullr soon would be there

The children were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of low pressure danced in their heads

And mama in her Skida, and I in my cap, had just scratched our brains regarding this persistent slab nap

The moon alight on some crusty old snow, gave no luster to my sled deck below

Alas…I know I’m easy to please, even if it’s sticking to low-angle trees

While I watch and wait for the weather to be snow-struck

I love coming home and not testing my luck
