This week, several rounds of precipitation and wind have created multiple potential failure points in the upper snowpack. Another storm on Sunday will continue that trend. Given the right slope and trigger, any number of those interfaces could fail.
You can use test slopes or hand pits as you travel, but they likely will only give you information about the very top of the snowpack. You won't be able to adequately investigate layers from earlier this week that haven't had a moment to rest. For that, you'll need your shovel. Look for heavy snow over weak snow (upside-down snowpack) or easy failures in cohesive blocks to help indicate a slab avalanche problem.
Of course, recent avalanches are the number one red-flag of instability, and you should be able to spot one from this week almost anywhere you travel in the backcountry. Don't ignore these warnings - the snowpack has been under constant duress this week and needs time to heal. Help it out by avoiding slopes over 35 degrees where triggering a slide is more likely.
