Following days of strong winds at upper elevations, you can expect highly variable snow surfaces and unreliable feedback from the snowpack. Signs of instability, such as cracking or collapsing, are becoming rare. Your odds of triggering an avalanche are also decreasing, but if you find the wrong spot and trigger one, it could break deeply. Steep northerly- and easterly-facing slopes with recent wind drifting are the most suspect. Wind-sheltered slopes at lower elevations offer safer options.
