The most dangerous slopes are at upper elevations, where winds have drifted recent snow into thicker slabs over weak old snow surfaces. Look for cracking to identify unstable areas and avoid fresh, pillowy, lens-shaped drifts below ridgelines and in cross-loaded terrain features.
Safer travel can be found in wind-sheltered and lower-elevation terrain, where the new snow remains unconsolidated.
