Avalanche Activity

CM for 22.03 Windslab developing on N through E to SE aspects above 900m. New cornices will be fragile. Hazard Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: Unstable deposits of fresh windslab will develop mainly on North through East to South-East aspects above 900 metres. Locations such as gully tops, ridge flanks and crag aprons will be most affected, particularly where accumulations gain depth over the old snowpack. Fragile cornices will develop. Elsewhere, snow will fall mainly on bare ground with some older snow patches becoming firm and icy. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: The freezing level will steadily drop through the night to around 600 meters by daybreak. Frequent showers will fall as snow above 400 meters, beginning overnight and persisting throughout the day. Gale to storm force West-South-West winds. Observed Weather Influences: Gale force West-South-West winds. The freezing level was above the summits with heavy rain showers in the morning becoming dry later. ObservedSnowStability: The patchy snowpack is generally well stabilised. Remaining cornices are weak and prone to collapse. Ongoing limited potential for minor full depth avalanches within the steep crags of Coire Ardair due to continuing saturation of the snowpack. The avalanche hazard is Low.
