Snowpack

A lot of new snow and snowdrift in the south is prone to triggering. Before the snowfall, the old snow surface was mostly irregular. However, it was also angular in places, especially on north-facing slopes at a distance from ridgelines and sheltered from the wind.

In the north, since Friday strong southerly winds have led to the formation of wind slabs, some of which are prone to triggering. These will be covered with new snow on Sunday.

Gliding avalanches are still to be expected. This applies particularly to east-, south- and west-facing slopes below approximately 2600 m and more rarely to north-facing slopes below approximately 2200 m. These avalanches may be large in some cases in regions with a lot of snow.

Weather forecast until Sunday, 11.02.2024

It will be very cloudy and there will be widespread precipitation. In the south, precipitation will end in the morning. The snowfall level will be around 1000 m in the north and 1200 to 1500 m in the south.

New snow

From Saturday afternoon to Sunday afternoon, the following amounts of fresh snow are expected above approximately 1500 m: 5 to 15 cm.

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, -4 °C in the north and -1 °C in the south.

Wind

• In the north, there will be a weak to moderate wind during the night, with an increasingly strong westerly wind during the day.
• There will be a moderate northwesterly wind in the south.

It was mostly cloudy with some clear spells in the north and east in the morning. Precipitation fell in the south. The snowfall level was between 1200 and 1500 m.

New snow

There was less new snow than expected. Since Thursday evening, the following amounts of fresh snow have been recorded above approximately 2200 m:

• central part of the southern flank of the Alps, Val Bregaglia: 40 to 50 cm, in western Ticino up to 60 cm;
• the rest of the Main Alpine Ridge from the Simplon area to the Bernina Pass: 30 to 40 cm;
• extreme west of Lower Valais and northern Lower Valais, remaining part of the Main Alpine Ridge: 10 to 20 cm;
• elsewhere: there were only a few centimetres of snow or it remained dry.

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, +2 °C in the north and - 2 °C in the south.

Wind

There was a moderate to strong wind, with a stormy southerly wind at times at high altitudes.

Trend until Tuesday, 13.02.2024Monday

On Monday, 5 to 15 cm of snow will fall in the north. The snowfall level will be around 800 m. It will be fairly sunny in the south.

In the north, the danger of dry avalanches may increase somewhat. It will decrease in the south. Gliding avalanches are still to be expected, including large ones in regions with a lot of snow.

Tuesday

A few centimetres of snow will still fall in the north during Monday night into Tuesday. During the day, it will be quite sunny, with milder temperatures from the west.
