Avalanche Activity

Strong southerly winds

Avalanche danger is low. Isolated danger zones are found on north and east-facing slopes. Ridgeline older drifts generated by southerly winds can be triggered as small-to-medium avalanches by large additional loading.

Snowpack Structure

Fresh shallow snowdrift patches have been deposited on N/E facing slopes, mostly in Niedere Tauern and Northern Alps, where the snowfall level was at 1700m. The snow was deposited atop a melt-freeze crust on N/E facing slopes. The snowpack is stable and has settled well. Near ground level the snowpack is moist to wet.

Weather Synopsis

Variably cloudy with some sunshine. Local showers in the afternoon, snowfall level at 1400 m. Towards evening also possible in the southern rimline ranges. Strong SW winds.

Tendency

Saturday: stormy winds with gusts at gale strength, plus snowfall in the morning on the northern flank of the Alps amid low temperatures. In the afternoon the winds will ease only very slightly. On the southern flank of the Alps somewhat less stormy. At 2000 m: -10 degrees. Winds up to 70-130 km/hr. Slight increase in avalanche danger levels can be expected.
