Avalanche Activity

New snow and wet snow represent the main danger.

In all regions more frequent medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large moist and wet avalanches are possible as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation, in particular on very steep slopes, and at the base of rock walls. In the regions exposed to heavier precipitation the likelihood of avalanches being released is greater. At high altitudes and in high Alpine regions an unfavourable avalanche situation will persist in some cases. This applies in particular on very steep north and northeast facing slopes. Backcountry tours should be started very early and concluded timely. The Avalanche Warning Service currently has only a small amount of information that has been collected in the high Alpine regions, so that the avalanche danger should be investigated especially thoroughly in the relevant locality.

Snowpack Structure

Since Tuesday the weather has been very cloudy. Down to 2000 m and below snow fell on Thursday over a wide area. Up to 2600 m and above rain has fallen. Outgoing longwave radiation during the night was reduced in some cases. 25 to 50 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen since Tuesday above approximately 2600 m. As a consequence of highly fluctuating temperatures and rain up to high altitudes the snowpack could not consolidate during the last few days. The weather conditions as the day progresses will give rise to increasing moistening of the snowpack. The conditions in all altitude zones are spring-like.

Tendency

The conditions will facilitate a gradual strengthening of the snowpack in all aspects.
