In sintesi

Observers down in Norway Basin have seen recent natural avalanches that have slid on the Solstice crust.Observers are also seeing weak snowpack structure especially on the more northerly aspects.Snowpit test columns are failing consistently with easy to moderate force on layers made up of crusts and uncohesive sugar snow (facets).This storm cycle is forecasted to drop 12"-18" of new snow on our already weak snow pack by Saturday morning creating dangerous avalanche conditions on slopes steeper than 35 degrees.

    Overnight Schneider Meadows was checking in with 10"  of new snow.Up to 7" of new snow forecasted through Friday night .That snow is sitting upon a combination of surface hoar,surface facets,and crusts.Also expect to see density changes in the new snow. It will take 24-48 hours for this new snow to bond and gain strength.Today and tomorrow would be good days to play on low angle slopes less than 30 degrees and well anchored by trees.See Calib Merrill's recent observations taken from Norway Basin.

    Snow pack structure is weak and the problem is widespread.Snowpit data is revealing a facet/crust layer cake combo that exists close to the surface and consistently down 2' or more where the snow is a meter plus deep.This new snow will add a lot of extra weight to an already weak snowpack.The extra weight added by a recreationalist could easily cause the slope to avalanche.Careful snowpack evaluation,cautious route finding,and conservative decision making are essential today and tomorrow when recreating on or beneath terrain steeper than 30 degrees.
