Strong winds and new snow will lead to fresh wind slab development near and above the treeline today, with peak instability expected midday.  When in doubt, choosing travel routes with lower slope angles in sheltered terrain will limit your exposure.

    Strong winds will redistribute loose surface snow today, leading to continued windslab development throughout the day.  While wind speeds are expected to decrease this afternoon as the snow tapers off, they are expected to continue at transportable speeds. Expect the size and distribution of fresh wind slabs to be greater in areas with higher snow totals (Mammoth and North). You can also expect slabs to continue to grow in size even after today's snowstorm exits the region. Blowing snow, recent drifting, hollow drum-like snow surfaces, and shooting cracks in surface snow are all signs that indicate nearby wind deposits. Be suspect of terrain features that encourage drifting, such as the leeward sides of ridgelines, alpine couloirs, gully features, and cross-loaded depressions. Sheltered terrain with lower slope angles will offer safer riding opportunities.

Avalanche Discussion

The elevated hazard today is being driven by new snow and winds. Snow accumulations today will be higher in areas near and north of Mammoth and at higher elevations along the Sierra crest. The southern part of the forecast area has received far less snow out of this system, and as a result, the size and distribution of windslab development will be less. Conduct your own localized assessments and track new snow totals closely. No matter where you wish to travel today, you can expect the avalanche hazard to rise as you move up in elevation and closer to the crest.

This fresh influx of cold, low-density snow could lead to some loose dry activity today, particularly in steep and protected areas at upper elevations. Cloud cover and strong winds are likely to keep wet snow instabilities in check today, but spring often brings dynamic weather, and things can change quickly. It won’t be impossible to see some loose wet sluffs on solar aspects as the sun comes out this afternoon, particularly if the winds underperform the forecast.
