Shifting wind and new snow mean dangerous avalanche conditions. Dial it back near wind-loaded slopes where dense drifts will be sensitive and could be large enough to bury you. Conservative terrain choices, with low slope angles, are the safest bet.

    Shifting winds will build fresh drifts on all aspects. Local hazard assessment will be crucial. Conditions will be most dangerous where the most new snow falls - likely in the northern half of the forecast area. Wind slabs will be largest and most dangerous as you climb above the treeline on leeward slopes. Don’t discount sensitive slabs at lower elevations, and on unusual aspects. While these may be smaller, they can be dangerous above terrain traps. Track blowing snow and growing cornices as clues pointing to wind-loaded slopes. Avoid steep terrain features that encourage drifting such as the leeward sides of ridgelines, gully features, and cross-loaded depressions. Dense, textured surfaces that feel hollow or crack around you mean you’ve strayed onto wind-loaded terrain. Sheltered areas and low slope angles will be safer.

Avalanche Discussion

A quick-hitting storm has dropped up to 8 inches of new snow this morning. Winds have increased overnight from the southwest with strong to extreme gusts. Snowfall will taper off by midday. Winds will shift and be moderate from the north by this afternoon.

Yesterday’s wind board and sun crusts will be today’s bed surface. New drifts that form further down the slope, or in usually sheltered areas may rest atop dense, settled snow with weak grains on top. You could trigger avalanches that break in unexpected ways. Give rippled, round drifts a wide berth.
