In sintesi

There are currently thin and isolated windslabs from the brief snow event on Sunday the 17th. Pay attention to areas where snow was loaded into low lying gullies, chutes and below cornices to see how this new snow is bonding to our stout crust layer before committing to steep terrain. The biggest threat out there today will be wrecking or falling on the firm crust from last weeks rain event!

    On Sunday the 17th we received a small dose of snow across the area with the West Cabinets picking up 4 inches and 1-3 inches in other ranges. This new snow was pushed around by light to moderate winds and packed into small slabs in depressions such as chutes, gullies and below wind lips. The new snow came in warm and dense resulting in a surprisingly strong bond with our hard crust layer. These small slabs may be found on any aspect at treeline and above. They will likely be stubborn to triggering, a quick test with a hand shear or cut with your track should reveal whether the new snow is bonded to the crust at your location.

Avalanche Discussion

Well, it's pretty grim out there right now with a thin layer of new snow on top of a rock hard base, unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much moisture coming in the near future. On yesterdays tour we managed to poke just above treeline before we lost visibility in a thick fog layer. On the way up we found the small shot of new snow had been pushed into any low depression where it could settle into fairly dense slabs. I did lots of poking and hand shear tests and found the new snow to be stuck like glue to the crust layer. Keep in mind I visited one drainage yesterday, so, stay alert to the potential for conditions to be different at your location, especially in the West Cabinets where snow totals where a touch higher.

Our current surface conditions are dominated by the rain crust from January 13th. Warm temperatures, rain up to 7,000' and crazy winds have left us with a wide spread natural avalanche cycle and a crust layer that I can barely break with a shovel in some locations. Yesterday I was able to get up to 6,400' and found it varied in hardness and thickness. There is obvious carnage from natural avalanches everywhere you look in steep terrain below 7,000'. This wild rain and wind event really hit the reset button on our snowpack for the near future by bridging over our weak layers and flushing out the weakness in steep terrain. It gave us pretty stable avalanche conditions; but, the riding is less that optimal right now. Stay upright out there and keep an eye on the wind slabs.
