In sintesi

Although the danger is low, you can still trigger an avalanches that could be large enough to bury you in particularly wind-loaded locations near ridgelines or where the terrain funnels you into a constriction. When navigating on steeper slopes, make sure you can self-arrest due to the presence of a strong crust just below the shallow snow. Expect very shallow snow cover on southerly aspects and at lower elevations.

Several inches of new snow should fall at cold temperatures Thursday night into Friday. Winds should be just strong enough to transport this snow onto lee slopes, where they will be large enough to bury you in isolated locations near ridgeline and above terrain traps. Where you find 6" or more of snow above the recent crust, use simple hand shears and slope tests to check for fracture character. When in doubt, avoid steep, convex rollovers and terrain traps.

Example: Textured surfaces like this indicate wind loading on nearby slopes.

Avalanche Discussion

The Olympics received a healthy soaking Tuesday and Wednesday at all elevation. That wet upper snowpack has refrozen to form a strong crust, limiting the avalanche problems to the snow arriving Thursday night and Friday.

While avalanche danger may be in isolated to upper elevations near ridgelines on Friday, the mountains still contain hazards. Anticipate very demanding travel conditions including icy slopes beneath the shallow fresh snow on all aspects.  Warm, windy, and wet weather over the past week took its toll on the snowpack significantly eroding cover on steep southerly slopes and along exposed ridges. You may notice many obstacles reemerging. Give yourself extra time to deal with the challenging conditions and navigating around obstacles.

2020-21 Forecast Schedule: Avalanche danger ratings will be issued for the Olympics every Friday through Sunday and during mid-week holidays. During the week when the Hurricane Ridge road is closed, forecast information will be updated daily to include expected conditions and relevant travel advice under the No Rating label.

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
