Avalanche Activity

As a consequence of new snow and wind the avalanche prone locations will become more prevalent as the day progresses. In the regions neighbouring those that are subject to danger level 4 (high) the avalanche prone locations are more prevalent.

The fresh snow as well as the wind slabs that are forming during the snowfall must be evaluated with care and prudence in all aspects above the tree line. The avalanche prone locations are to be found especially adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls and on wind-loaded slopes. At elevated altitudes these avalanche prone locations are more prevalent. They are barely recognisable because of the poor visibility. New snow and wind slabs can be released, even by a single winter sport participant or triggered naturally. Additionally avalanches can also be triggered in the old snowpack and reach large size. Careful route selection and spacing between individuals are recommended.

Snowpack Structure

5 to 15 cm of snow fell on Wednesday above approximately 1800 m. In some regions 10 to 20 cm of snow will fall above approximately 2000 m. The sometimes storm force wind will transport the new snow significantly. The wind slabs are lying on soft layers in particular on shady slopes. The unusual weather conditions will give rise to unfavourable bonding of the snowpack. Intermediate and high altitudes: Large-grained weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack in particular on shady slopes. High altitudes and the high Alpine regions: The sometimes strong wind has transported the fresh and old snow significantly.
