You can trigger an avalanche in drifted snow on upper-elevation, northerly and easterly-facing slopes. Look for and avoid steep, drifted slopes below ridgelines, convex rollovers, and in cross-loaded gullies. You might find drifts farther down the slope than you anticipate. You might trigger an avalanche on a deeply buried weak layer if you find a thin trigger point, like on the margins of a slope. You likely won't get any warnings from the snowpack before you do. Look for safer riding on wind-sheltered slopes or slopes less than about 30 degrees.
