Backcountry travelers venturing into steep terrain could trigger isolated pockets of wind slab up to a foot deep. As temperatures warm and snow surfaces soften the potential for larger triggers such high marking snow machines to trigger larger and deeper slabs on steep avalanche prone slopes will increase.

    Wet slabs are possible on steep avalanche prone slopes if significant warming occurs. The slabs could be human triggered and have potential to fail on faceted snow near the base of the snowpack on the ground.

Avalanche Discussion

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )A fast moving Pacific trough will bring snow shower activity to the region. Relatively light snowfall amounts are expected. Light snow fall should begin in the mountains after midnight. Accumulations of several inches are possible at the higher elevations by Thursday evening. Isolated afternoon rain showers are possible at the lower elevations. Temperatures will be in the 20s and 30s in the mountains and in the upper 20s to low 40s in the valley. Winds will be west to northwest at 10 to 20 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be LOW in the Teton, Continental Divide/Togwotee Pass and the northern portion of the Greys River/Southwest Trails areas. In these areas humans who venture into very steep terrain could trigger small pockets of windslab up to 18 inches in depth.The general avalanche hazard in the southern portion of the Greys River/Southwest Trains area is expected to be MODERATE. Winds slabs up to two feet in depth could be human triggered on steep slopes.
