In sintesi

Triggering avalanches will be possible near and above treeline in previously wind deposited snow. The stubborn nature of these wind slabs may lull you into a sense of confidence if you dont see signs of unstable snow but be cautious on wind loaded slopes especially in steep terrain. Be aware of terrain traps, such as rocks and cliffs, below you that can increase the consequence of triggering an avalanche.

On Wednesday, I found wind slabs to be very stubborn to triggering. Wind slabs tend to stabalize a few days after the storm/blowing snow, but I want to give this problem another day or two. Also remember, variability across the mountains can be significant. The places where wind slabs may be more reactive are steep high alping terrain that experienced more wind effect. If you are venturing into the high country on Thursday, find a safe area to evaluate the wind slabs before commiting to steep and extreme terrain. Hand sheer tests and utilizing small safe test slopes will be very useful. Look for cracking in the wind slab, recent avalanches, and general signs of unstable snow as an indicator that you could trigger an avalanche.

The light NW wind overnight and Thursday won't move much snow, but always be aware of places where the wind speed picks up and the wind starts transporting snow.

Avalanche Discussion

On Wednesday, it was easy to break off cornices that had developed during the last storm cycle. Be careful at ridge tops. Try to good vantage point to check for cornice hanging over lee slopes. Stepping out onto a cornice could lead to a long fall on the slope below.

With a few days for the upper snowpack to settle, dry loose avalanches won't be a widespread problem, but we could see some small ones on sheltered north facing terrain.
