In sintesi

Due to lowering temperatures and a return of cloud cover, the upper snowpack is refreezing and locking back together, resulting in low avalanche danger today. Continue to pay attention to overhead hazards such as large glide cracks and cornices on Friday. Modest snowfall and variable winds this weekend will create the potential for small slabs to develop in steep terrain at upper elevations on Saturday and Sunday.

    Last week's warm temperatures and sunshine caused the upper snowpack to become wet and slushy with water percolating through the snow and lubricating bed surfaces under the snowpack. This caused large glide cracks to open in steep and rocky terrain at upper elevations and it has weakened large overhanging cornices. Keep an eye out for "frown-shaped cracks" and steer clear of these unpredictable hazards until the snowpack has had ample time to fully refreeze. Temperatures will continue to drop going through the weekend and hopefully make this potential hazard go away.

    The snowpack surface has not yet frozen below 5,000' making loose wet avalanches a potential issue today at lower elevations on all aspects. Avoiding terrain steeper than 35 degrees at lower elevations will help you avoid this issue. If the snowpack surface has crusted over and become supportive at your location this problem is likely a not a concern.
