Recent new snow and plenty of wind transport.
Plan your route to optimise safe travel options. Windward slopes, ridges and ribs are the way forward.
The last 72 hours of new snow will increase the chance of Storm/Wind slab on Northern and eastern aspects, although all aspects will have been affected at higher elevations.
Avoidance of any pillows of new snow and a careful safe spot to safe spot gameplan is the go.
When the sun comes out and interacts with the new snow, there will be a shedding effect from steeper terrain. Mostly from solar affected slopes, but all aspects could react immediately post storm.
13th September 2 x Lw Sc small size <1 1850 m on NE asp - Ohau Ski Field
12th September 2 Controlled size 1 windslabs. 1 x Ne Aspect 1950m, 1 x Se Aspect 1880m - Ohau Ski field
13th & 14th. small loose wet slides on solar affected slopes.
13-14th Sept small Natural Loose wet running to ground near Mt Armstrong in the aspiring forecast area, but adjacent to the northern part of this area. Thanks for your input.
16/09/26 numerous loose dry and loose wet slides observed in the Barirer Range. Nothing new reported.
We have had a layered snow pack with multiple melt-freeze or wind crusts and rounded grains in between. In general below 1800m the snow pack continues to be come moist and trending isothermal.
15-20cm new snow to below threshold on Wednesday/Thursday. Around 5cm to 1600m likely overnight Sunday.
Fine, but becoming partly cloudy with isolated showers in the afternoon. Snow lowering to 1900 metres late evening. Mderate west to north west winds rising to strong or gale. The freezing level is rising to above 2400m.
Spring conditions and recent strong to gale winds have increased the risk of long sliding falls.Caution on large terrain features where you may loose and edge if skiing or boarding Carry Ski / Boot crampons and an ice axe if venturing into the alpine.
