Dug a 1 meter pit shy of entering Nick's Happy Valley to evaluate the main face, but also tried to mimic the terrain in Nick's gully by finding a clean section of smooth snow (there was a bit of wind-buffeted snow that I tried to avoid that blankets the majority of the face to the west). There is approximately a 3cm crust in this part. This slope was fully shaded during my time there from 2pm-4pm. Traveled cautiously due to condition reports and unfamiliarity with this particular terrain. Sunny otherwise, no wind, 20F. Noticed two transitions probing the snow at approximately 45cm and 65cm, with the probe bottoming out at 120cm. Doing hand-snow density tests, the snow seemed consistent with the four-finger method down to the first transition. From 45cm to 65cm could only poke a finger in, and back to fourf-ingers below 65cm. During column test, I made it to three wrist-joint hand taps on the shovel and had the column break away at the Lower 65cm transition. Holding the bottom in place, continued on to two elbow-joint slaps before the top 45cm transition gave way.
