Quick report
The goal of field time today was to take advantage of clear weather conditions to assess terrain and snowpack distribution in Tuckerman Ravine, Huntington Ravine, and Gulf of Slides ahead of an expected snowfall of 3-6 inches this weekend.
Summary of Conditions:
- Tuckerman Ravine:
Terrain is fairly well connected, with continuous snowpack from top to bottom in many gullies and well-developed start zones. - Huntington Ravine:
Snowpack is patchy and discontinuous, with minimal accumulation in gullies. Start zones are poorly developed and unlikely to produce large avalanches under current conditions. North-facing gullies were not observed. - Gulf of Slides:
Snow coverage remains sparse but in many areas sufficient to act as a bed surface for a large avalanche. Many trees between gullies remain uncovered.
Overall this is a shallow snowpack not typical for early January.
