Quick report

Approaching treeline, we observed lovely looking 35-40° snowfields below the summit. Our hand pit results from treeline and pole jabs along the way to the summit suggested a cohesive slab on top of a deep faceted layer. All on top of a smooth rock slab bed surface. With that, our lack of avy equipment, and the other group members lack of avy education, we decided to summit and ski down our lower angle skin track rather than skiing the open snowfields. The snowpack was unreactive on the way down, generally supportive but occasionally we punched through. We also observed a porcupine.

We only dug a quick hand pit and didn't take measurements, so these numbers are approximations. At treeline around 3200' on an eastern facing slope, we found a layer of new, fist hard, snow from last night, 6" deep. Below that, 10" of 1F snow, followed by about 2 feet of depth hoar down to the bedrock . The 1F slab pulled off the depth hoar unevenly and with little resistance.
