First tracks up the 579 road to Cape Horn summit in the morning. Plenty of wind loading and wind signatures from the NW in the Cape Horn summit area. Light SE winds on the ridge lines Had two collapses while ascending the SW ridge of Cape Horn mountain. These were isolated to stiffer, recent wind drifted snow. Minimal wind affected snow on the W aspect of Cape Horn Mtn, but cross loading on the S and SW aspects. Pit at 8200 on 230 aspect of Cape Horn Mtn: ECTN (4) down 33cm. Storm snow behaved somewhat like a storm slab here. Solar aspects had a thin crust by the afternoon. HS150 150 F 117 4F+ 87 K 75 P 35 K 25 4F+ 0 1/6 interface at 87 cm was well bonded, but still shears very cleanly with a shovel pry.
Avalanche
Wet loose avalanches coming out of the rocky chutes above the 579 road. Happened mid day. One of the wet loose slides pulled a size 1 soft slab on the debris cone, appeared to be just the storm snow, about 30cm deep. From a distance, saw dry loose size 1 avalanches in shady terrain steeper than 40 degrees. Confined to steep cliffs areas.
