Point 6

Took a quick tour dropping into the east side of point 6. Had an isolated collapse at the bottom of the bowl at 7000' while skinning out. Dug a quick shovel pit at the top of the skin on the east aspect at 7600' about 50' below the ridgeline and found a weak layer about 10 inches down. The column failed while isolating it. The weak layer was about 3" below the old snow surface and appeared to be a temperature gradient facet or something of the sort. I could get my hand, 5 finger into the layer, and moved it around. Facets were large and looked like depth hoar. The crust at the old snow surface was bridging this pretty well but there were places where the crust was weak and it appeared to be the source of the collapse. Something to consider before jumping into big terrain. There was a sun crust by the afternoon on east through west aspects. Northwest still had some powder.
