Quick report
We dug a hasty pit on 20 degree slope on a ENE aspect at 7800 feet- this particular slope had some additional shade from a nearby tree line and likely sees less sun than similar aspects. HS at this location was around 160 CM and the surface snow was spring like, and supportable with boot penetration around 5 CM. There were previous tracks in the area. Probing revealed a weaker layer above a crust about 50-35 CM down- this was likely the FEB 10 PWL. The slab over this layer was ranged from 1 finger to pencil hard. We had a sudden collapse on this layer during a compression test and just out of curiosity we conducted an ECT… this scored an ECTP26 on the FEB 10 PWL down 35 cm from the surface. Surprised by this result we conducted another ECT which yielded a similar result -ECTP 22. The grains we found in the failure plane were up to 4mm in size and appeared to be moist rounding facets on-top of a layer of slush above a thin crust.
